In 2005, back when the SGA fandom was still wee and we had about 150 stories on Wraithbait and about 100 people on the mailing list, [personal profile] moonlettuce turned to me and said, "Hey, you know what would be really fun?"

Knowing Claire as I do, I immediately started looking for the nearest exit.

"No," she said. "Hear me out. We should totally run a Secret Santa for SGA. It will be awesome!" *

I eyed her warily, as is my wont whenever she gets that look in her eye. "Won't that be a lot of work?"

"Nah." She waved her hand loftily. "If we're lucky, we might get 10, 20 people signing up?" **

9 exchanges, several million words and 780 stories later...

We honestly never thought back then that we'd reach the milestone of 10 SGA Secret Santa Exchanges and yet, here we are. Yes, 2014 is our 10th exchange, and we've thoroughly enjoyed *** every single one of them.

10 years baby

Thank you all for making this milestone possible! ♥

Unfortunately, all good things must come to an end. We've therefore we've decided that this year's exchange will be the last one. 10 seems a good round number to stop at, and with the fandom becoming increasingly quiet, and the number of sign ups diminishing year on year, we'd like to end on a relatively high note rather than outstay our welcome :)

We will continue to keep the comm on both LJ and DW to serve as a record of all of the fun we've had, and I'll continue to archive all of the stories that were too big to post to LJ, so none of the stories or comments left on them will disappear. For that same reason - to make sure that everything that's ever been posted as part of the fest continues to be available - we won't be handing the reins of this particular exchange over to anyone else, although if anyone wants to run their own SGA exchange next year, we will, of course, offer any advice and support we can.

So, with the aim of going out with a bang rather than a whimper, sign ups will open tomorrow and run for longer than usual to give everyone who wants to take part in our last hurrah the chance to come and play. The deadline for story submissions will still be December 10th, and posting will start on December 14th.

So while you're thinking of all the things you want to ask for or to write, please, please spread the word of the fest far and wide to anyone you think might be interested. It would be lovely to see some past participants join us for our last big blow out.

So let's go out with a bang, and - most of all - have fun! :D

* Claire was not wrong about the awesome :D

The last story for the fest is now safely coded and ready to post! The final seven stories will be posted today.

So I'm officially declaring Santa Madness open. Pinch Hitter appreciation post (brief anonymised summary of their requests) will go up when Claire has a chance in case anyone wants to write a treat for them. (It's not obligatory ::g:: but it would be welcome.)

Treats don't have to hit the 1,000 word minimum and you can send them to us if you want them posted anonymously as part if the overall fest or you can post direct to the comm if not. You can write them for anyone who took part (not just your assigned recipient) and the more the merrier! You can find people's requests in the memories, and most people also remembered to tag their requests with genres/pairings as well, so if you have a hankering to write something in particular you should be able to find someone who'd appreciate it :)

If you're an author who had to default or finished your story but failed to submit on time, you're more than welcome (and actively encouraged) to send it to us now :)

Santa Madness will close Midnight on the 31st.

Hi guys

The latest extension requests we gave were until today. I'm now starting to get requests to extend the extension, so I figured it was best to set it out here.

Firstly, please stick to your original extension if at all possible.

If you can't make your original extended deadline, please let us know as soon as possible by mailing us at sgasanta at gmail dot com. Don't make us chase you! I've been watching Primeval: New World and I'm eyeing those neat taser guns they have (Becker's wasn't quite that cool!).

If you miss your deadline and don't contact us, we'll put your assignment out to pinch hit within 24 hours of your deadline expiring. We do reply to all mail and check our spam folder regularly, so if you've contacted us and haven't heard back, we haven't received your email. Please try again, leave a comment here or PM us.

We are not giving any extensions after 17 December 8pm GMT, so please don't ask us for an extension past that. Any stories not with us by then will go out to pinch hit. You can still submit your story even if we've arranged a pinch hit.

I feel really hardass now. I'm blaming the dinosaurs.
alyse: (snowflake)
[personal profile] alyse
Not that we're trying to panic you here :D

Just a reminder that stories should be sent to us at the sgasanta at gmail dot com address.

Hi guys

Stories have started to trickle in now (and the deadline for requests for extensions was yesterday do if you need one and haven't asked for one hie thee to your email programme right now :D) so I thought it a good time to remind you all that formatting info can be found on the admin: formatting tag :)

ETA: Please e-mail us with requests for extensions rather than commenting here. It's a lot easier to keep track of it that way, and don't forget to include the LJ name you used to sign up with when you contact us. Thanks!
alyse: (snowflake)
[personal profile] alyse
This is your two week reminder. Actually, it's your 13 day reminder because I forgot to post last night. :D

Your stories are due to be with us no later than Monday 10th December. So far we've had two stories, so if you have sent it in and haven't had an acknowledgement please resend to sgasanta at gmail dot com.

Just a reminder - if you need an extension, please make sure that you request it by the 5th. And there will be a formatting post, which will be the same as last year's, but I'm sneaking on in my coffee break so if you want to send your story in before this year's post goes up, just follow last year's and you'll be fine!

Matching is complete and we are hoping to start sending out the assignments tonight. There are a couple of things, however, I need to alert you to or remind you of before we start :-)

Matching

It's never going to be possible to have a perfect match for everyone, or in fact anyone, especially as we encourage people to make a list in the spirit of 'shy bairns get nowt'. However, just like people who put everything up to and including the kitchen sink, and a pony to put in it, on their Christmas lists, no one expects you to give them everything. Except, possibly, a pony.

So please don't panic if you get your assignment and it includes things that you didn't offer or in fact said you couldn't write. You have not been matched on those. You've only been matched on the things that you did offer and no one expects you to write anything other than that (unless, of course, you want to :-)). I know it seems a bit counterintuitive that you'd be matched with somebody who requested something that you specifically said you didn't want to write, but sometimes you're the best match for them even in spite of that.

If we have genuinely screwed up and given you an assignment that you simply can't write, please let us know as soon as possible so that we can rejig when necessary. On the other hand, if you said that you'll write anything, we've taken you at your word and it's too late to back out now. [insert evil laughter here]

Writing

Please pay attention not only to your recipient's wants but also their do not wants. It's very easy to overlook that they said they didn't want this marvellous thing that you suddenly had a brilliant idea for, but it's also fairly quick way to turn someone's smile upside down.

If you're in any doubt as to whether your idea is going to work or not, please feel free to run it past Claire or me. We'll give you our honest opinion on whether or not we think it will work and, if necessary, we'll contact the recipient on your behalf to clarify it.

I know that it can be a bit gutting if you have a brilliant idea sparked by your recipient's request and then realise you can't write it for them, but don't forget that we will be running SGA Santa Madness again this year and someone else may love it if you write it as an additional story, or failing that, you can always try stuffing someone's [livejournal.com profile] fandom_stocking (that's not snark by the way – I love [livejournal.com profile] fandom_stocking and you should all write me Abigail/King!).

Submissions and Deadlines

You might notice something a little different about your assignment email this year. Like the fact it's coming from a different email address. Yes, in our normal spirit of extreme organisation, Claire and I did actually set up an SGA Santa email address. Two years ago, when it finally dawned on us that it would be quite a good idea. Needless to say, we promptly forgot about it when it came time to send out last year's assignments.

So we have an email address – sgasanta at gmail dot com. Please whitelist it or do what ever clever voodoo you do to make sure it doesn't hit your spam folder. Also, please remember to send your assignment into this address rather than any addresses you have for Claire or I individually. Your assignment will come from this address, so hitting reply to your assignment mail should work.

Now we come to the deadlines question. The timetable is exactly the same as it's been since the very first SGA Santa, which means that stories should be with us by 10 December at the very, very latest. I know Claire and I are generally easy-going and if you request an extension we tend to be fairly flexible in granting one. However, that flexibility was tested to its very limits when 10 December last year rolled around and we had fewer than half the stories.

Consequently, this year requests for extensions should be in to us by 5 December at the very latest and be accompanied by a substantial bribe of chocolate and/or Ryan Reynolds. (I'm joking about the chocolate.)

That's not to say that we won't still be reasonable where we can if you request an extension later than that, because we know that things unexpectedly crop up at the last minute, but it will help our blood pressure significantly if you mentally designate 10 December as 'the end of the road is here' instead of pencilling in something like the 15th into your fannish commitment calendar (you know who you are :D). Otherwise, there may be crying and flailing and taking your name in vain involved :D There may even be Paddington Bear stares, and you wouldn't want that.

Final note about submissions – I'm still crippled, so your assistance in making sure that when you submit something it's formatted as well as you can would still be very appreciated. There'll be a formatting post at some point explaining all of that, but I fully expect mocking about all of the Dragon caused misheard words in any admin posts or emails I make or send :D Have at it.

Hey guys

Just a quick reminder - please remember to tag your sign up post with the relevant 'requests:' tags. They're organised as follows:

  • for characters, they begin requests: c: character name

  • for pairings, they begin requests: p: pairing name (in alphabetical order)

  • for genre/type, they begin requests: cat: type

  • and finally, for anything not already included in the above tags, there's requests: need new tag

Don't use any tags that don't begin requests:, because those are story tags :)

Tagging your request will make it easier for anyone thinking of writing an extra gift fic for 'Santa Madness' to find requests that they might be interested in writing. So if you don't tag, you're pretty much crossing yourself off Santa's list!

The Tesseract has awakened. It is on a little world, a human world...

::ahem:: Sorry, fandom clash...

Anyway, I was sitting here thinking to myself, and what I thought was Self, there's something that you're meant to be doing today. Something that happens around this time every year. But it eluded me like bald cat greased with butter. So, I pondered* and pondered** and then pondered*** some more. And then it hit me, like a blast of inspiration from the heavens. A blast of inspiration that came in the form of a small grey naked alien wearing a festive hat.

And we all know what that means: SGA Secret Santa 2012 is open for business *\o/*

Bring us your gen, your het, your slash.

Bring us your OTPs, your threesomes, your forgies, your puppypiles in the middle of the gateroom.

Bring us John and Teyla and Rodney and Ronon.

Bring us Wraith and Asurans and Asgard and Genii.

Bring us Teyla, directing Ronon's hands as they slide over John's body. Bring us Sam and Jennifer, and seven inventive uses for medical equipment. Bring us the team, laughing and loving and never once doubting that they'll be there for each other.

Bring us the stories that long to be told, the ones that rest on the lips of Radek, of Evan, of Rodney.

Bring us your requests, and bring us enough fic to see us all the way through the festive season and out the other side.

The relevant dates:

Sign-ups are between now and Tuesday October 9th. All the requests will then be jumbled up and sent back out by October 16th (gives us time to match everyone up).

Responses to gift requests are to be sent to one of the moderators ([livejournal.com profile] moonlettuce or [livejournal.com profile] alyse) on or before December 10th.

Between December 14th and December 23rd all gift!fics will be posted for your delight and delectation.

Things I'd like: You can request as many things as you'd like in here. That doesn't mean you'll get them all, but there's no harm in asking. If you'd like a specific pairing, or character, then speak now or forever hold thy peace :-)
Things I wouldn't like: If there's anything you wouldn't like to receive (pairing, character, etc) then here's the place to mention it.
What I can do: Are you a slash only person? Do you only write a specific character or pairing?
What I can't do: If there's anything you feel you can't do, then please say so here. If you can't write NC-17 fic, or have no desire to write het / slash, or a specific pairing or character then please say so.
Pinch hitter?: In the event of someone not being able to complete their gift!fic, are you willing to be stand-in writer?

Please post your request as a new post in the community.

For those people without LJs, the non-LJ sign-up post is here: http://sga-santa.livejournal.com/380827.html

All stories should be a minimum of 1,000 words in length and everyone who signs up to receive a story will be expected to write one in return.

<b>Please note, if you do not get a story to us in time we will organise a pinch hitter so that your recipient isn't left without a fic at the end of the fest. If we do this, do not whine at us, because all we will do is mock.</b>

Okay guys, according to the Spreadsheet o' Doom, everyone who submitted a story should now has at least one story to call their very own. Please let me know if I've missed you and you haven't got a story despite a) signing up and b) submitting your story. (If you're a pinch hitter who hasn't signed up and therefore hasn't received a story, I'll be contacting you shortly for some prompts.)

I therefore declare that Santa Madness is open! \o/

Feel free to browse the request tags and write extra treats for people. Santa Madness stories will be posted between the 26th and 31st and all stories should be sent to us at alyse or moonlettuce at livejournal.com.

Pinch hitter appreciation post to come shortly, once I've had a chance to trawl through prompts.

Hi guys

We've still got a number of stories outstanding, and still have some authors we haven't heard from, so we've made an Important Executive Decision (so important that it comes with capitals!).

Any stories not with us by close of business on Saturday go out to pinch hit. So please don't ask for any extensions past then.

That does not mean that you can't still submit your stories if you're still working on them. The worst case scenario is that your recipient ends up with two stories, and if you get it into us quickly enough after we've put it up for pinch hit, then the pinch hitter will be given the choice of whether or not to still write a story. And there's always Santa Madness if you get it in after that :)

And since I know someone will ask what time zone that's in (apparently Pago Pago is popular ::g::), 'close of play Saturday' means 'whatever time Al and Claire get out of bed on Sunday morning and switch the computer on'. So probably around midnight-1am EST (8-9am GMT on the 18th).

Pinch hits will probably go up around midday Sunday (GMT), which is in the timezone of 'Al's been up for a while and had several cups of tea to wake her brain up'.

Just a reminder that sign ups close at midnight tomorrow, people! (That's the 9th, for those of you who, like me, are datally challenged ::g::)

A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away...

::ahem:: Sorry, wrong fandom.

Anyway, I was sitting here thinking to myself about life, the universe and everything* and I thought Self, you're getting restless. Life doesn't have as much meaning any more and you're suffering from a terrible case of ennui. So, off I trotted to Google (only metaphorically, of course, since I was sitting at the computer and there was no actual trotting involved at all) and googled "cure for terrible case of ennui." We'll ignore the first option, since I'm pretty sure it's immoral, illegal and physically impossible. Also, it would be a 'mare to source a llama at this time of night.

But the second option? Well, apparently, the best sure for a terrible case of ennui is to use a picture of a small grey naked alien wearing a festive hat in some way.

Well, Self, I thought, you just happen to have one of those to hand. Of course, I couldn't just randomly post a picture of a small grey naked alien wearing a festive hat for no reason. That would just be daft. Which meant, I had to have a reason. So, I continued to think. Self, I thought again, what possible reason could you have that would necessitate the use of a picture a small grey naked alien wearing a festive hat?

And then it came to me.

Which is a tl;dr way of saying SGA Secret Santa 2011 is open for business *\o/*

Bring us your gen, your het, your slash.

Bring us your OTPs, your threesomes, your forgies, your puppypiles in the middle of the gateroom.

Bring us John and Teyla and Rodney and Ronon.

Bring us Wraith and Asurans and Asgard and Genii.

Bring us John, in love with his entire team and realising the only choice he has to make is what flavour lube to use. Bring us Richard and Jennifer, neither realising what the other is thinking until they both reach out. Bring us Sam, who never understood what an awesomely porntastic place Atlantis was until she got there and realised that the Friday Night Free-For-All wasn't a pot luck dinner.

Bring us the stories that long to be told, the ones that rest on the lips of Evan, of Teyla, of Richard.

Bring us your requests, bring us enough fic to see us all the way through the festive season and out the other side.

Dear all

Claire and I have been running SG:A Santa for six years now, and while it's occasionally been hard work, we've always appreciated the generosity of spirit and sheer joy that people bring to the exchange, from the people who participate, to those who pinch hit and those who don't write but who take the time to leave feedback for our authors. You've always made it fun and always been positive and upbeat about the exchange, treating each other with respect and kindness (at least publically :)). We sincerely appreciate the fact that you've all been full of the Christmas spirit, even if the present that you got under the tree wasn't exactly what you wanted Santa to bring, and we love you all ♥.

Unfortunately, there is always one rotten apple who tries to spoil it for everyone.

For the first time ever, Claire and I have just had to ban someone for their behaviour. And not just from [livejournal.com profile] sga_santa. No, they're banned from everything we run in the history of forever. (Never let it be said we are not righteously vengeful when the situation calls for it.)

Trolling other authors taking part in the exchange is both seriously uncool and utterly unacceptable. Doing it the way this person did? Spectacularly stupid.*

This message has been brought to you by Al and Claire, who are older and have more insurance**.

And now I'll return you to your regularly scheduled broadcasts.

* we're talking Darwin Award levels of stupid here, people

** bonus points to the people who get the quote.

We're waiting for one more pinch hit to come through. The last I heard yesterday was that it was supposed to be coming last night, but it still hasn't tipped up in my inbox (unlike a mail from Claire that finally arrived 10 hours late this morning, sigh).

I haven't given up entirely on it, but given that it's Christmas Day, if anyone would like to write a short treat - drabble, ficlet, whatever length - for that recipient and send it on through to alyseci5 at gmail dot com and moonlettuce at blueyonder dot co dot uk so that this person can have at least something today, that would be utterly fabulous. The request is for McKay/Sheppard, angsty with a happy ending and Christmas related if possible. ETA: the more the merrier - there's no need to claim this one! And I'll post the full time story whenever we get it.

And once the last pinch hit is in, Santa Madness will open and I'll post the Pinch Hitters Appreciation prompts.

Thank you, and a Merry Christmas to all!

Last day of posting is tomorrow, my lovelies! So please don't panic if you've had a 'we got it!' mail and the story you wrote hasn't been posted yet.

There's still 9 to go ::g::

On the other hand, if you haven't received a 'we got it!' mail, then we haven't received the story and have organised a pinch hitter. If you've finished the story, please feel free to send through again and we'll post it as an extra before Madness opens.

Santa Madness will start once everyone has a story posted - we're still waiting for the last few pinch hits to trickle in for tomorrow's posting. Don't forget that we've tagged all sign-ups with request: 2010: tags so you can find inspiration for your favourite pairings, or they're filed by requester in the memories here in case there's someone special for whom you want to write.

Dear all

Remember how I said that [livejournal.com profile] aithine was working on an easy to use template for the stories hosted on my website? Well, she's done it, and here is an example of how it will look using one of last year's stories, Leah's The Sacrificial Mage:

Last year's template

This year's template

The main difference - other than being much neater than my attempt ::g:: - is that the notes etc are in a php file, which will make it easier to edit author names in at the reveal, and to edit the link back to the [livejournal.com profile] sga_santa post for that story.

If anyone is feeling particularly html savvy and would like to code their own stories, here is a link to the template-info.php file, which contains all of the story notes etc. Please note that this is not obligatory. If you just send us the story file, we're quite happy to code it up for you and it may be easier for us to do it anyway if it's something you're not entirely used to. This is just for people like me who like messing around with this stuff ::g::

info for those who like messing about ::g:: )
[identity profile] moonlettuce.livejournal.com
Since we're getting closer to the deadline for stories (December 10th) and stories are starting to trickle in now (yay! for people who are early ::g::), we figured it was time for a 'Formatting Your Fic, Yay!' post.

Given [livejournal.com profile] alyse's previous post about having difficulty typing at the moment, we're totally cribbing previous posts to firm up our submission guidelines.

This is nothing new but it is absolutely essential that you follow these formatting guides this year, as Alyse will not be physically capable of fixing stuff the way she has previously, and Claire will pout if she has to do it all herself.

Meta Information )

Formatting )

Story Length )

File Types )

Things not to do )

Those of you that have already sent stories in, you're fine and don't worry about it. You're already on the mod LJ and good to go when posting starts.

Any questions?

* Please note, you can also do this by sending us chocolate (Claire), alcohol (Alyse), Jared Padalecki trussed up and tied with a bow (Claire), Andrew Lee Potts - again, trussed up and tied with a bow (Alyse) or porn (both of us)...
