Title: Life Is...
Author: [livejournal.com profile] ldyanne
Recipient: [livejournal.com profile] lilyleia78
Pairing: McKay/Sheppard; background Zelenka/Lorne
Rating: PG
Word count: 26,000
Warnings: None
Notes: Dear lilyleia78: Normally I wouldn't warn about this, because I think part of a story is taking the journey with the characters, but you specifically asked for happy fic (and no Death fic). I wanted you to know that while it might look like there's a major character death, please trust me and keep reading. I'm all about the happy endings! I hope you like it, I had a blast writing it.

Also, thanks to my beta (you know who you are) for your help with this fic. Your turn around was amazing and your comments and suggestions helped to make this a better fic.

Summary: John meets a teenage runaway who reminds him of someone from his past. When he tries to help her, it changes his life forever.

Hi Santa! I just wanted to let you know that I've seen my story is up. I'm going to be a responsible adult and go to bed now, but I'm super excited to read it tomorrow. It'll be my reward for getting a different exchange fic turned in. And thanks for the warning. I do trust you, but I'll feel better knowing it'll all be alright before I even start. :)

Oh my goodness. I'm simply overwhelmed with happiness. So much action and adventure and what a lovely ending! I can tell you really paid attention to my wish list and it's very appreciated. I love Keyla and the glimpse into everyone's lives.

Oh! And SG-1 and did I see a hint of Jack/Daniel in there? So bittersweet. But you blew up Jack's cabin! LOL! Daniel will just have to help him rebuild I guess. :) Thank you so much Santa and a very Merry Christmas to you!

I'm glad you liked the story, I had such a great time writing it! I like mixing in SG-1 when I can.

Blowing up Jack's cabin seemed like a good idea at the time ;-) I'm sure that Daniel will be happy to help him rebuild.

I hope you have a great 2013!

Poor John, fifteen years is a long time, but I loved that they're together and safe on Atlantis. Glad that John obviously had O'Neill on his side.

Thank you! I felt really bad about making John wait for 15 years, but I had to have a happy ending!

Thank you for coming back to type the comment again! I'm glad you liked the story. It was a lot of fun imagining John and Rodney's daughter.

First of all, I'm not sure why this story doesn't have 100+ comments. Four doesn't do it justice!

This story was very gripping, and it held my attention (and kept me up way too late last night!!! ::grin::). You weaved a great, compelling story here that grabs the reader from the first paragraph, not letting them go until the end of the story.

A few things I adored - John's reaction was breathtakingly heartbreaking. I mean, who *wouldn't* retreat when the love of their life was killed before their eyes? And Keyla... I loved that John instantly had that connection to her, before he even knew it was Rodney's and his child. And her seeking John out, knowing how to hack - because she's Rodney's daughter. And Rodney - aww, Rodney... I love that man so... And when they finally get together, and John hold Rodney, running his finger along the cesaerean scar... Just wonderful!

If I had one critique, it would be that early on in the first 1/3 of the story or so, there's a "there" that should be a "their". That's it! :)

Overall, I have to say this is probably my favorite Santa offering this year! Santa, I hope you join again next year, and I'm lucky enough to be your recipient!!!

You know that you've pretty much made my 2013 don't you? Thank you so much for your lovely review.

I had such a great time writing this story and it was great to know that people liked it.

I will find that boo and fix it before this gets posted anywhere else. Thank you!

I thought the way the little tells (Keyla's blue eyes, the black belt, her tech savvy, the urge to fly and the skateboard under the bed...) added up was great.

I'm glad they got to go home in the end.

Shame about O'Neill's cabin, though. At least no fish were harmed.

LOL

I'm pretty sure no fish were harmed!

Thank you, I'm glad you enjoyed the story. I had such a great time with Keyla, I'm pretty sure she's causing chaos in John and Rodney's life in Atlantis, but at least they're all together.

Oh, this was wonderful! Keyla is so sneaky and clever, she's the perfect mixture of her fathers :) I love that she set out to find John to make her father happy, and in doing so set in motion the reunion between John and Rodney. It's so hard to think of John without Rodney by his side, but I think this worked out well for him :P I like to think they eventually have another child, so John can be there :) I loved Jack's role in this (Jack is my favorite from SG-1). This was quite the wild - and fun - ride! I enjoyed this fic a great deal :D :D

Thank you! I'm so glad you liked this, I had such a good time writing this. I think you're right, they did have another child, but Rodney told John it was his turn to carry their baby. *g*

Jack is one of my favorite characters from SG-1, I love to include him whenever I can.

Exciting story! It made me all mushy inside when SG-1 volunteered to help out with John's training drill in order to support him on the anniversary of Rodney's death, and the ending is perfect.

I'm sorry it took me so long to leave a comment, you can bet I read this as soon as it was posted and really enjoyed it. Kind of twisty with the plot, which I love, and a great post season 5 AU. Plus Rodney is such a good dad to Keyla and yet still totally in character. That worked so well. And John, quietly going on with his life but you can feel how it's empty and sad, but his sense of duty won't allow him to quit. Very well done indeed.

Thank you! I'm so glad you liked the story, I had such a great time writing it. I've always thought Rodney would make a great dad, I love stories where he is a dad, so getting to write one made me so happy.
