Title: A New Beginning
Author: [livejournal.com profile] padfootthegrim

Pairing: Lorne/Zelenka, McShep mentioned

Disclaimer: I don't own Stargate and am making no money off of this.
Author's Notes: The Grandview 'verse is a McShep story arc by [livejournal.com profile] fawkesielady_ed and is used here with permission. My recipient wanted domestic fic and their favorite pairing was Lorne/Zelenka. It took me a while to come up with something, actually, but I'm fairly pleased with how this turned out. I might actually consider writing a second fic for it later, maybe. We'll see, no promises lol
Summary: Radek and Evan are back on Earth with their adopted son, Marcus. They've found the perfect neighborhood to start their new life in.

"Hey, you're leaving too?"

Radek looked up from shutting down his computer and blinked at Rodney. "Ano. Evan has been home all day unpacking."

Leaning against the desk, Rodney arched an eyebrow at Radek in a very Sheppard-like way. "You guys found a house already? You've only been back three days."

Radek shrugged and slid his laptop into his computer bag. "Base housing is not good for Marcus. He is too used to the sky and the open spaces."

"So you guys did end up adopting him," Rodney chuckled. "I knew it. John owes me ten bucks."

"You two bet on that?" Radek glared at him as they left the lab and headed for the elevators.

"Why not?" Rodney pressed the up button and Radek watched the numbers go down. "You guys were talking about it a lot after Evan's team brought him back to the city but we left before anything was set in stone. John figured that you guys weren't really ready for the family thing yet and would have just let the Athosians adopt him."

"He insisted on staying with us once Carson finally released him. He still needed care from his injuries and he and Evan had already bonded fairly deeply. Evan was usually to be found in infirmary when Marcus was there. And the first time Marcus came to us in the middle of the night after a nightmare..." Radek trailed off and Rodney nodded.

"You were hooked," Rodney finished as the elevator doors swept open.

"Ano," Radek smiled as they stepped inside. "I had never given much thought to children, but Marcus, he is special. So strong to have survived the culling and still be willing to trust."

"How did he feel about coming to Earth?" Rodney asked. He hit the button for the top level and the doors slid shut. As the elevator lurched into motion, Radek was hit again with a pang of longing for Atlantis and her transporters.

"He was more worried we wouldn't take him with us," Radek answered. "He's adapted well; Cassandra, Janet's daughter, has been very kind to him and he is learning a lot. I think they have a special bond themselves, both of them being from other worlds."

"I'm sure John would give me a Very Disapproving Look if I didn't invite the three of you over sometime," Rodney said as the elevator stopped. Both scientists got out and walked down the hall to the other elevator, which would bring them to the surface.

"We would like that," Radek accepted, marveling once again at how different Rodney was compared to when they'd first met. "Speaking of, do you think you could give me a ride home? Evan has the car."

Rodney sighed as they stepped into the second elevator. "I have to get the kids from daycare and I don't even know where you're new house is."

Radek laughed. "I do not mind. We'll need a place for Marcus to go sometimes so I would like to see the daycare the two of you have selected. And I'm on your way home, I promise."

Rodney stared at him for a minute as the elevator rose toward the surface of the mountain. "You're close to us?"

"Quite close, actually," Radek snickered.

"Only you, Rodney," Radek chuckled as he stared with amusement at the sign for the day care.

"What?" Rodney huffed as he pulled into the parking lot.

"Brilliant Minds Childcare?" Radek asked, raising an eyebrow at his friend.

Rodney rolled his eyes and unbuckled his seatbelt. "They're the best, you know. I won't have my kids in some second rate day care."

"Of course not," Radek agreed sagely as he got out of the car and followed Rodney toward the building.

Inside the center, it was airy and bright; colorful pictures drawn by children littered the walls and the large windows let the sun stream inside. There was a woman at the front desk who looked up at them and smiled, recognizing Rodney. "Dr. Sheppard, it's good to see you," she greeted him Radek noticed her nametag, which proclaimed her to be Tina. Rodney gave her a little wave and her eyes slid toward Radek curiously.

"Hello," Radek spoke up once it looked like Rodney wasn't going to make introductions. "I have moved here recently with my partner. We will be looking for a day care for our son."

"Oh," Tina's smile brightened. "How old is he?"

"Three," Radek answered. "He will be four in just a few months."

"If you would like I can set up an appointment for you and your partner to have a tour," Tina turned a little and Radek heard her typing on a computer that was out of his sight. "You can bring your son with you of course."

"This will be good," Radek nodded. While he was paying attention to Tina, Rodney had disappeared, probably through the door and into the rest of the building to fetch his children. Radek and Tina discussed dates and times, and at the end she handed him an appointment card. "Rodney says you're the best," Radek informed her as he tucked the card away in his pocket. "This is high praise; Rodney has very exacting standards."

Tina laughed. "Yes, we know. We've been watching Dr. Sheppard's kids for a while now."

Radek grinned and they shared a moment of silent understanding on the subject of Rodney Sheppard. A moment later, the man himself emerged from within the day care, a baby in his arms and a young boy nearly running circles around him. "What did you feed these kids, Speed?" Rodney grumped at Tina as he herded the boy forward.

Tina shrugged and smiled at him. "Just juice and crackers at snack time. Have a good night, Dr. Sheppard."

Rodney reached down and grabbed Nath's hand as they left the building and crossed the parking lot. Radek followed them, just watching his friend with his children. Rodney and Nath were talking about something all the way to the car, and then Nath kept talking as Rodney unlocked and opened the door. He got Grace in the car and then helped Nath in as Radek went over to the passenger side and opened his door. He found he couldn't wait to get home to Evan and Marcus. He hadn't seen them all day since he hadn't even been able to break away from the labs and run home for lunch.

Once they were all in the car, Rodney turned and looked at Radek. "Right, where am I taking you. Time to spill it."

"Don't thpill in the car!"Nath interrupted.

"It's a figure of speech, Nath," Rodney called back, smiling into the rearview mirror at his son.

Radek chuckled and shook his head. "Just drive toward your house, Rodney. You will know my house when you see it."

"Really, you're gonna keep being mysterious about this?" Rodney huffed and they pulled out onto the street.

Radek didn't say anything as they drove him, but he could see Rodney glancing at him as they got closer and closer to Grandview Boulevard. Rodney finally broke once they'd turned onto his street. "Okay seriously, tell me you didn't buy a house on my street."

Radek just grinned, and he turned to watch Rodney's expression as they came into sight of Rodney's house. The house directly across the street no longer had a 'for sale' sign in the front yard, and Radek's CR-V and the Uhaul truck they'd rented to move their things out of storage were sitting in the drive. "Oh, you didn't."

"We did," Radek confirmed. "We're your new neighbors. Doesn't that mean you have to bring us a casserole?"

Rodney pulled up in front of Radek's new house and turned to glare at him. "I don't cook. John cooks, you'd have to talk to him about it. But why would we bring you a casserole?"

"Isn't that what people usually bring new neighbors?" Radek chuckled as he unbuckled his seat belt and opened his door. "Thanks for the ride, Rodney."

"Sure," Rodney already sounded a little distracted, but Radek was happy he'd had his fun.

As Rodney pulled his car around to angle it down his own driveway, Radek made his way up to the front steps of his and Evan's new house. The door was unlocked so he let himself in and set down his laptop bag on the polished wood floor. From somewhere in the house he could hear Marcus playing; the sound of music telling Radek that Marcus was getting acquainted with some of the new Earth toys they'd bought him. In a room closer to the door, Radek heard a grunt and a light thud.

Poking his head into the living room, Radek found Evan arranging their furniture. He stood in the door and watched for a moment, just appreciating the lean lines of Evan's body through his slightly sweaty shirt. "Is this the part where I say 'honey, I'm home?'" Radek asked.

Evan turned and grinned at him, abandoning the couch he'd been wrestling with and sweeping in to give Radek a firm kiss. "I guess it kind of is for right now. How was work today?"

"Rodney was his usual self and everyone else is insufferable morons," Radek replied as he glanced around the room. "You did a lot of work today," he observed.

Evan nodded. "Kitchen, both bedrooms, and the bathroom are done. The living room is mostly done. I haven't started on the study yet."

"That's more than enough for one day, Evan," Radek smiled and kissed him again. "I say we order food and watch something with Marcus. We have yet to introduce him to Walt Disney."

"I'll order food then," Evan gave Radek a little shove further into the living room. "You get to set up the entertainment area."

"Of course I do," Radek sighed good-naturedly.

"Well yeah," Evan laughed. "I know better than to do it. You'll just change everything around anyway- I know how you geeks operate."

Radek had to admit his lover was probably correct. When Evan wandered away to get his phone and place their order, Radek set about putting together their entertainment center. He bet he'd be done before Evan was; after all, setting up something as simple as a TV, a VCR/DVD, and a game system wasn't nearly as difficult as building bombs.

Radek looked up from the tangle of cords in his lap to find Marcus watching him. "Marcus," Radek smiled and pushed the cords off his lap, freeing up the space for his son. "Have you had fun today?"

Marcus came over and snuggled into Radek's lap and Radek wrapped his arms around the boy. "Lots," Marcus confirmed. He wiggled a little until he could grab hold of the cords at Radek's feet and pull them into his own lap. His scarred left hand didn't really want to cooperate, but Radek watched Marcus focus on making it grip the cords securely. "Whatcha doing?"

Radek made a mental note to talk to Dr. Lam about more PT for Marcus. "I am trying to hook up the TV so we can watch a movie together. Want to help?"

Marcus nodded and tried to pull the cords out of their tangle. With a wince, Radek stopped him and showed him how to help actually unwind everything. It was good for Marcus to use his hands like this. It would work the muscles and hopefully help to loosen some of the scarring, which still showed itself brightly against the boy's darker skin. Radek thought Marcus actually looked a lot like Ronon, both in skin tone and in body structure, though the Satedians and the Kezri, Marcus' people, were not related as far as Carson had been able to tell.

Evan found the two of them like that a few minutes later. Radek was explaining how electricity worked to Marcus, who was still trying to untangle the cords despite Radek's attempts to use the same cords as a visual aid for his explanation. "I ordered pizza," Evan finally interrupted.

Both Radek and Marcus looked up at him, startled. "PIZZA!" Marcus exclaimed happily, grinning.

Evan suggested Marcus help him pick out a movie, and the two left Radek in peace to finish with the TV. It wasn't until Radek was frustrated enough to be reduced to swearing in Czech that the cords finally behaved themselves and he got them unwound. From there it was quick work to plug everything in where it needed to go. "Finally," he muttered, stepping back to survey his work.

"Ano, I believe so," Radek sighed, dropping himself down on the couch next to Evan.

"Marcus chose The Lion King," Evan informed him. "He's very curious to see all the Earth animals."

Radek smiled as Marcus gave him the DVD case. "In that case, it is an excellent choice," he got up and put the DVD in the player as the doorbell rang.

"PIZZA!" Marcus shouted, darting out of the living room before Evan could even make it off the couch.

Radek watched Evan follow Marcus out, but the sound of the door opening was drowned out by the Lion King's opening theme. Locating the remotes, Radek turned the volume down just a little and started the movie over before hitting pause and settling himself once again on the couch. Marcus rushed back in, carrying paper plates, and then came Evan with the pizza boxes.

As they served themselves and Marcus, Radek reminded their son that the pizza was hot and would have to cool. Marcus found the play button on the remote and then promptly jumped at the startling beginning of the opening song, and Radek had to laugh. He suddenly remembered the days before Rodney and John left Atlantis. He remembered long nights in the labs and hardly seeing Evan because of both of their hectic schedules. He found he liked this much better. He still got to play with science all day, but now he wasn't constantly in a near life-or-death situation. Now, he had the luxury of coming home at the end of the day to his son and his lover and Radek knew he would always treasure this.

As the animals all crowded around to see Simba presented to them, Radek wondered if Evan would kill him if he brought home a parrot. Maybe he'd bring it up after Marcus was asleep, just to see his lover's reaction...

This is so sweet ♥ I love that Lorne and Radek have moved in next door to John and Rodney, that they'll be sending them to the same daycare. I like to think their son and John and Rodney's become good friends XD This was domestic and such a fun read!

Oh, the horror - Rodney has neighbors he has to talk to.

This is very cozy and peaceful. Also, I want Lorne to organize my house.
