We match people up based on what they've requested and what other people have offered, but in a way that bears in mind what other people have asked for and offered.
So if A has asked for x, y and z, and B has offered x, y and z, you would think that they'd be matched together. However, it could be that C has asked for z and only A and B have offered to write it, so one of them would have to write for C.
We also try and avoid straight swaps where we can. It's not always possible, given the number of different pairings we have, including rare pairs, but wherever possible we'll try to make sure that A doesn't write for B if B is writing for A :)
I think a hat may be involved for people wanting non-kinky McKay/Sheppard, but you'll have to ask Claire about that :D
