Third Times A Charm

John watched silently as Teyla gathered a few things from her room and stuffed them into a small animal-skin bag. From the way she was moving about the room he could tell that he wasn't her favourite person in the world, scratch that, galaxy right now.

She stopped mid stride across her room and turned abruptly to face him. He could see almost anger simmering behind her eyes."I do not require you to accompany me as protection," she stated.

John smiled slightly, he had come to the conclusion that Teyla was most beautiful when she was angry, except for when she had him pinned down in the gym after whopping his ass for the umpteenth time.

"Well consider this then, I'm not coming for your protection, I just feel like going for a walk." He smirked.

"Take a walk on the mainland then, I'm sure there is a cliff for you to take a walk off," she shot back.

It was then that John decided she had been spending too much time with Rodney, and made a mental note to tell him to stop teaching her Earth idioms, especially since she never got them quite right anyway.

"Give it up, Teyla, I'm coming with you whether you like it or not," Teyla pushed past him and walked towards the door, "Great! Where are we going?"

------

It wasn't really the fact John wanted to accompany Teyla on her realtions trip to Malacus that was making her angry. It was the trip that she annually had to make to Malacus itself. She did not agree with many of their ways and looked forward greatly to tomorrow when the meetings with the village elders would be over and she could return to Atlantis, to be free of their atrocious views upon what a women could, should and would do.

She looked over at John, who was talking to Rodney on the other side of the gateroom. She wasn't sure what they were talking about but she could guess that he was accusing Rodney of something when the look on Rodney's face went from slight annoyance to downright defensive.

She started to walk over to them when Rodney stalked out of the gateroom muttering what she thought was 'Have a nice trip!' but she could not be sure.

John looked over at her as she made her way to him.

"Look, Teyla I'm sorry that you're angry I'm coming with you, but I'm not letting you go alone," he said softly.

Teyla was about to protest that she did not need anyone to look after her when John held up his hand.

"For my piece of mind, please, Teyla. I don't like the idea of you being out in that galaxy all alone."

Any anger Teyla might have felt towards him left her in that instant.

Teyla looked on, midly amused, as John strapped at small hand weapon to his leg and pulled his pants down over the top, concealing the weapon completely.
"You do not trust the Melacuns?" she asked.

"I just don't like to be caught without protection," he grinned back.

------

As John sat bound next to a recently deceased woman, he tried to figure out just how things managed to go from good to bad so quickly
.
The meet and greet with the elders had gone well and they had been invited to take a look around the village. When Teyla had hesitated, John had happily agreed. First mistake.

As they walked through the village, they came across a very old woman bound to what appeared to be an altar. John had been taken aback; she looked so much like his grandmother that he had to remind himself that he was in another galaxy and there was not even the slightest possibility that the woman could be her.

When they got closer to her he could see that she was wounded and the white knight in him had led him over to her, to help her. Second mistake.

Teyla had called out to him, but he did not hear her as he reached down and tried to untie the woman. The hairs on the back of his neck sprang up and his instinctively pulled his hand weapon from his pant leg and whipped around. Third mistake.

Consequently, here he was. Teyla had been given a choice by the village elders. Leave without him and their relations would not be harmed, or leave with him and never return to their world. When Teyla had chosen him over the Melacuns, they had forced her to leave. Without him.

John sighed, closed his eyes and tried to move a little bit. He had been sitting in the same position for hours now and if he didn't know any better, he could have sworn that his ass had left with Teyla.

Thinking about Teyla made him feel warm against the cool night air. He knew she would return with backup and he decided then and there that as soon as they were alone together again he would tell her that his feelings for her were more then just friendship. It was time that they stopped dancing round each other. He'd never been a particularly good dancer anyway.

A warm hand caressing his cheek made his eyes fly open. Teyla knelt before him, her warm brown eyes full of concern, as she went about un tieing him from the altar.

"Tey," he started to say, but her finger went to her lips and he said no more. He didn't feel like fighting his way out of this one. Teyla was right, sneaking out would be much better.

As she leaned across him to untie his left arm she whispered in his ear. "I have come to be your pawn in shining armour." John couldn't help but smile.

As they made their way back towards the gate, John reached across and took Teyla's hand in his. She looked up at him, surprise breifly flashed across her face, and then smiled shyly.

They walked along in comfortable silence until they reached the gate and Teyla removed her hand from his to dial Atlantis. As the wormhole started engaged and they prepared themselves to return home, John turned towards Teyla.

"Elizabeth's been teaching you to play chess hasn't she?"

Very nicely done. Loved how John always wants to help those in need before he thinks about the consequences and Teyla is always saving his ass.
