I know what you mean about SGA: it is still the fandom I find most successful in AU fics. (Clunky sentence, but hopefully you can see what I mean.) They fit, or can be fitted, into almost any setting. (I can't think of a setting that wouldn't work, though there are a few AUs where the characters maybe haven't been translated quite right.)
I remember seeing a performance of a Beethoven violin sonata which was so erotically charged I couldn't believe they weren't doing it. And if that's shocking now, I can't imagine how much more so it would have been in 1820. (ish).
Rodney not only wants to reinvent a piano that can stand up to him, he wants a piano that will let him drown out everyone else! And John is the sort of person who'd be happy with endless improvisation, cadenzas he's never heard, etc.
