this phrase rings a bell, and I hope you'll remind me--wasn't that a description of one of Beethoven's work, he was not writing for orchestra, but against it? that's not entirely right, though now it's going to drive me crazy. Mussorgsky? Dvorak? Both of them are too late, I think.
Wonderful story, the language and attitude are fantastic, and I love the correlation between leading men into battle and leading an orchestra!
