I am really lucky! This wasn't what I expected, but I really, really enjoyed it. Well, not Evan getting the tar whipped and beaten and burned out of him, but everything else: his point of view and character, how deftly you described what he understood about himself even when he couldn't remember anything, how vivid the other characters were, and the small, lovely details like how the voice in his head is a woman (makes so much sense that it would be his mom he's remembering), how he feels about the name 'Kite', and what he notices about David before he even knows why David's important.
The rescue was fantastic. You made me smile so much at the description of McKay, not to mention that he was the one ordering the slavers around. I loved how worried everyone was about Evan, and how his relationship with David was an open secret. It somehow never occurred to me that Evan would get his memory back through drawing, but it was a perfect way to end the story.
So, if it's not obvious, this was a wonderful surprise. Thank you so much for this present and how much effort you took to make something for me that followed so much of what I asked for. I've been smiling the whole time I've been writing this comment because you did this just for me and I love it.
