People that don't have Livejournal can actually make posts to communities now. It was added around May.

Yeah, but I think it's only good for people who have twitter/facebook/openid (like dreamwidth)/an understanding of how LJ works ::g::

So it's still a good idea to have a sign up post simply for those who might look at a new (to them) site and go '...' and 'run away!' (cough, not that I would ever do that you understand).

A comment is far less scary! Usually! ::uses scary icon::
