Summary: TV star John Sheppard has something to hide…

John sighed as the door closed behind the young woman who had won the meet-and-greet with him. He didn’t want to go back out there, to the VIP party that was still in full swing, all he wanted to do was go home to Rodney. But John couldn’t do that just yet. He still had to stay at the party for at least another two hours.

John hated these kinds of events and if he hadn’t won a prize for best actor in a popular TV show, John wouldn’t have stayed. But since the prize had been a public choice award, John had felt obligated to attend.

If only Rodney could be with him. But no, Rodney had decided that since John was a ‘famous actor’ and some sort of teen idol, John should keep up the image of the womanizer the press liked to make him out to be. It was annoying and trying and John didn’t like it one bit. John still didn’t know how Rodney and he had managed to keep it from the public, hell, he didn’t have a clue how they had managed to keep their relationship from his manager even, but somehow they had done it. Not that John didn’t hate every single second he had to pretend to be single and interested in women, though. But Rodney had been insistent and John just didn’t want to disappoint him.

Knowing his grace period was over John took a deep breath and got up from the couch he’d been sitting on. He’d better go back out there before Elizabeth Weir, John’s manager and self appointed slave-driver came to get him. John knew he was only stalling, anyway, because he had about enough of Chaya.

The young, aspiring actress seemed to have set her mind on getting her hands on John and just wouldn’t take no for an answer. The real problem was that John was too polite to tell her how much her behavior annoyed and disgusted him. She’d been all over him the whole evening: touching him, standing beside him when the cameras were on him and clinging to him like a leech. The yellow press would surely have a field day, making her out to be his newest fling. And then there was the live report they had been airing all night … Rodney had most likely already seen her and the way she had almost smothered John.

Secretly John actually hoped that Rodney would get a little jealous and agree to end the charade they were playing, but chances were low – John had always been popular with women and Rodney was sure that John coming out would mean the end of his career. John wasn’t as convinced. He liked to think that people liked him and his performance because he had talent and not because he had a pretty face and was presumably heterosexual.

Usually it wasn’t such a huge problem for John to pretend. Most women he kept company with were co-workers and colleagues who seemed to sense he wasn’t after them at all. But John had to admit that Chaya was an exceptionally persistent case. She probably was already planning their wedding or something. John didn’t know if he should laugh or be angry at her antics, since clearly she was completely delusional. John could never be interested in her – or any woman for the matter. Not that Chaya knew that.

Reluctantly, John opened the door and walked out to join the others again. As expected almost instantly there were people surrounding him, asking questions, taking photos or filming him, and not even two minutes after he was back to the party, Chaya grabbed his arm, clinging to him once more. John resisted the urge to detach her and push her away. It was just two more hours he told himself firmly, until he could go home and curl around Rodney.

John was about to give a polite, non-committal answer to yet another reporter, when suddenly there was some sort of ruckus at the part of the room that divided the VIP area from the rest of the party for the – mostly very rich – public. John thought he heard Rodney’s voice and wondered if he had decided to come to the party after all since John had gotten an invitation to pass on to someone of his choosing. The fact however that no-one knew of their relationship would make it almost impossible for Rodney to get to him now that the party had moved to the VIP lounge, though.

Deciding to see if it was really Rodney and to maybe have a chance at getting away from Chaya, John excused himself and made his way over to the entry to the VIP lounge. When he was almost there, Elizabeth suddenly stepped up to him, trying to hold him back.

“John, you shouldn’t go there now. There’s a crazy fan out there, insisting he’s got an invitation you gave to him. Please, let security handle it,” she said in a low tone, well aware of the camera that was still tuned in on him. But John didn’t listen. He made his way over to the place where a very agitated Rodney was hurling insults at the security guards at the moment who had a tight grip on his upper arms.

Elizabeth, who was very keen on not making a scene, was faster than John though, hurrying past him and asking, “What is the matter here? Why has he not been taken away yet?”

“Ma’am, he’s got an invitation and he insists he knows Mr. Sheppard. We’re trying to keep this silent but Mr. McKay here is making things difficult.”

“It’s Dr. McKay and I insist you let me …” John could hear Rodney rant and just as he was about to reach the security guards he felt a hand on his arm again, tugging him backwards.

“John, honey, you should let security deal with this. This crazy person might be dangerous,” Chaya purred and John had about enough.

“Oh for the love of …” he cursed, yanking his arm free and shoving Elizabeth to the side to get to the security guards.

Rodney’s relieved, “Oh good there you are, John,” was almost drowned out by Elizabeth’s surprised “John?” and his own “Rodney, what are you doing here?”

All around him people began to look at them strangely and one of the security guards asked, “Mr. Sheppard, do you actually know this person?” while still holding Rodney in a tight grip. Before John could answer though everyone began to talk again, making it impossible for John to get a word in.

Losing his patience with the stupid, annoying people all around him, John yelled, “Dammit, could you please listen to him. He’s been trying to tell you that he’s with me. And of course I know him. He’s my husband, for god’s sake.”

In the silence that followed one could have heard a pin drop.

And wow,

I can but hope there could be an expansion on this into say a 60000 word novel entitled "The Secret Husband"

Once more thank you

This is entirely too tantalizing. Which isn't to say it isn't great on its own, because it absolutely is.

Oh, it's so intriguing and awesome! I'm sure Rodney is working at home at his fifth dissertation, that's why nobody knows him even as John's friend ;)).

Lovely little teaser - left me wanting more. :-D

Your story

I'm w/ your sis and everyone else, need a prequel and a sequel and it is worth waiting for. Good ideas and good stories are waiting for. Perhaps you need to get your muse to stay focus lol and finish one project before starting others. But good prolifc is always welcome. Keep up the excellent work.

Add me to the list of people begging for a sequel. I want to know what the reactions to that last line were. Pretty please!

The ending nearly killed me with laughter. I wish John good luck with the aftermath of the reveal.

I look forward to reading more from this universe in the future.
