How did those women manage to reconcile normal/healthy/good and pain/loss/death?

Well I'm pretty much stuck on pain/hate/ew. Although it is weird that I'm bad with blood, but my period doesn't faze me. Very graphic description btw. 0_o

I really liked John's changed perception on women and gender.
