I could so easily see John as a conductor -- separate, in control, apart -- and Rodney as the impassioned soloist. And then I found myself writing the musical scenes the way I usually write sex ... lots of run-on sentences, stream-of-consciousness, synaesthesia. (Which left me at a loss when I wrote the actual sex!)
