Fantastic story. It does have some elements similar to Solitary, but it's also a unique story in its own right. I loved your John's POV, and his loneliness, boredom and privation were so well-written that for awhile there I was waiting for his rescue to turn out to be some kind of hallucination or torture. I'm glad I was wrong. :)
