When I was writing, I decided to characterise Rod as a bit of a yes-man and also as dishonest (in the sense that he doesn't give up information readily, while projecting the image of being a great guy) -- pretty much taking what the team said about him at the end of McKay and Mrs Miller literally. Poor guy!
